Background of the Study
Hypertension remains one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in Nigeria, contributing to a significant burden of cardiovascular diseases and other complications (Okafor et al., 2023). The management of hypertension requires more than just medication; lifestyle modifications, including changes in diet, exercise, and stress management, are crucial components in controlling the condition (Ibrahim & Lawal, 2024). Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, are often in the best position to offer lifestyle counseling to hypertensive patients. They can provide education on healthy living practices, encourage patients to adopt these changes, and monitor their progress (Alabi et al., 2023).

In Delta State, the prevalence of hypertension is concerning, with numerous individuals unaware of their condition or unable to manage it effectively due to a lack of lifestyle counseling (Nnamani & Okoro, 2024). While some healthcare providers may offer lifestyle counseling, the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in managing hypertension has not been widely studied. Nurses, with their frequent patient interactions and expertise in health promotion, could play a pivotal role in improving hypertension outcomes through education and support. This study will investigate the effectiveness of nurse-led lifestyle counseling in managing hypertension in Delta State, providing insights into how nursing interventions can help reduce the burden of hypertension in the region.

Statement of the Problem
Hypertension is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Delta State, with a high prevalence among adults. While pharmacological interventions are essential in managing hypertension, lifestyle changes play a crucial role in controlling blood pressure and preventing complications. Unfortunately, there is a lack of formal programs to educate hypertensive patients about the importance of lifestyle modifications. Nurses, despite their potential role in lifestyle counseling, face challenges such as inadequate training, low patient compliance, and limited resources. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led lifestyle counseling in managing hypertension in Delta State, exploring how nurses can contribute to better patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led lifestyle counseling in managing hypertension in Delta State.

2. To determine the impact of lifestyle counseling on hypertensive patients' adherence to treatment and lifestyle modifications.

3. To explore the challenges nurses face in delivering effective lifestyle counseling to hypertensive patients in Delta State.

Research Questions

1. How effective is nurse-led lifestyle counseling in managing hypertension in Delta State?

2. What impact does lifestyle counseling have on hypertensive patients' adherence to treatment and lifestyle modifications?

3. What challenges do nurses face in delivering lifestyle counseling to hypertensive patients in Delta State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led lifestyle counseling is effective in managing hypertension in Delta State.

2. Lifestyle counseling improves hypertensive patients' adherence to treatment and lifestyle modifications in Delta State.

3. Nurses face significant challenges in delivering effective lifestyle counseling to hypertensive patients in Delta State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hypertensive patients in Delta State who are receiving care in public and private healthcare facilities. The study will examine the role of nurses in providing lifestyle counseling and its impact on patients' health outcomes. The limitations of the study include time and resource constraints, which may limit the ability to capture data from all healthcare facilities or participants across the state.
